Hi, I am visting Morocco on my own in October 2008. I have three weeks and want to travel around taking trains and buses as I go. I do not want to take a tour
as I would like to meet local people not other Americans or worse British. I am also on a tight budget and cannot afford to spend more then 40.00 american
dollars a day.
I am planning on visiting Marakesh and open to any travel suggestions regarding visiting Morocco. thanks Amy yahoo id bluebonnets1966 |

Trip to Morocco | ||

Hi Emy:
Thanks for visiting this Moroccan forum. I must say that I envy you for your trip. Somehow this year , I didn't visit Morocco because of some personal obligations, and I already missed being there. But let me tell one thing for sure is that you choose the right time to visit Morocco. Personally, I think that from October to March or even April is the ideal time to be in Morocco, and that's because of two reasons: 1- most people are back from their vacations. 2- you get yourself a bargain everywhere you go. no exception. As first time visitor, and depending on how short or long is your vacation, you have to start from Rabat (since your first stop will be at Casablanca which is very close to Rabat) and go visit the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. It is a masterpiece you don't want to miss. It is one day trip and it's worth it. From there, you can go to Fez, and try to spend at least 2 days there. Fez is the most ancient of the Imperial Capitals, and the most complete medieval city of the Arab world, This city is a place that will stimulate all your senses I guarantee it. From there , you can take a trip to Marrakech, but through the mountains of Atlas and through the beautiful and vibrant green city of Beni Mellal and its famous Cascades d'Ouzoud which is one of Morocco's most beautiful scenic spots with a 110 meters high cascading waterfall. There is a small pool for a cool dip. You can also enjoy the beauty of the falls sitting at Cafe Immmouzzer, from where you can see the water creates a permanent rainbow. Once in Marrakech, and the first thing you have to visit after checking into your hotel (very important) is to start with Djemaa el Fna square, cause nothing in Morocco compares to this lively open-air circus with snake charmers, storytellers, jugglers and street artists of every type, specially in the evenings. after that, you are free to tour the city anyway you want, of course, there are guides available to show you around the markets, but the best way is certainly to find your way with the help of a map without rushing the experience by visiting a few markets a day instead of trying to take everything in on the first visit. In the area you can also admire the Ben Youssef Medersa, a great example of architecture belonging to the Marinides dating back to the XIV century. It is an ancient Koran school attached to the Ben Youssef Mosque featuring fantastic wooden ceilings and sculpted plasterwork, probably the best monument after the Koutoubia Minaret. Other interesting places in Marrakech are the Mellah, the old Jewish quarters with the best jewellery shops, the Bahia Palace, a beautiful XIX century palace open to visitors everyday from 9am to 5pm and the Saadian Tombs. Looking more like a peaceful garden surrounded by high walls than an actual cemetery, the Saadian Tombs, built by Moulay Ismail, are open everyday from 8.30 to 11.45 and from 14.30 to 17.45. For those people looking for green spots, the subtropical garden Jardin Majorelle is one of the most enchanting places in Marrakech, a small botanical garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle. The Marrakech Oasis, a large palm grove north of Marrakech featuring over 20000 palm trees, is a fantastic change of scenery to the urban surrounding and a great place to escape the heat of the medina especially in summer. You can continue your trip down to Agadir. It is a city which is first and foremost a beach town, but the areas vibrant cultural attractions seal the deal and make it worth the trek. In any case, i hope you enjoy your trip and also when you come back, we would like to hear from you. Regards. |
